Frequently Asked Questions

At Sonder Hill, we work to make breeding as easy as possible for you and your vet. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please reach out anytime.

Can you help me with a stallion recommendation?

Absolutely. Helping breeders reach their goals is at the heart of what we do. Our stallion pages are a great place to start your research, but we also love connecting one-on-one and learning about your mare and your plans. Our Help Me Match My Mare form is the best way to get personalized suggestions, and you’re always welcome to call, text, or email.

How do I secure a space in a stallion’s book?

To reserve a space in a stallion’s book, please return a signed contract along with payment. We can’t hold a space without a signed contract. If you don’t hear from us within a few days of sending your contract, please call or email so we can confirm we received it.

Where do I find a stallion’s breeding contract?

Each stallion’s contract is on his individual page, in the Breeding Information section. There you’ll also find details on fees, breeding forms, shipping guidelines, mare management, and registration, along with downloadable contracts.

If you’d prefer to submit your contract online, you can do so on our Book a Contract page, which also lets you pay securely online.

What is a Mare Breeding Passport?

The Mare Breeding Passport is a form we provide that your veterinarian signs to confirm your mare’s insemination dates, pregnancy check dates, and pregnancy status. Returning a completed passport is required under your breeding agreement. We need it to issue your foal’s Breeding Certificate. Click here to download a copy of the Mare Breeding Passport.

How do I get a Breeding Certificate to register my foal?

Breeding Certificates are emailed each winter to owners of mares confirmed in foal to one of our stallions. To receive yours, please return your Mare Breeding Passport, since it contains all the information needed to complete the certificate. Certificates may be held until your account is settled.

How do I request a semen shipment?

You’ll find instructions for requesting a shipment here. We’re happy to walk you or your vet through the collection schedule before you order. It’s especially important to know the semen request deadlines and availability dates for the stallion you’ve chosen, since these vary by stallion and location.

Why are some stallions offered with a live foal guarantee (LFG) and others by the dose?

It depends on each stallion’s frozen semen inventory and cooled semen availability. Our preference is to offer multi-dose contracts, but we work closely with every stallion owner to choose the approach that fits their stallion’s availability and our breeders’ needs. When frozen inventory on a stallion is very limited, offering it by the dose lets more breeders access him.

What does a dose of semen consist of?

Each dose of cooled semen we distribute contains at least 1 billion total sperm and at least 500 million progressively motile sperm. Processing is tailored to each stallion, but doses generally have a minimum 3:1 dilution, most commonly in an SMG extender with Timentin, at about 40 to 60 ml per dose.

Each dose of frozen semen meets or exceeds the industry-recommended minimum of 200 million progressively motile sperm, and most of our stallions are well above that. All frozen semen we ship has at least 30% post-thaw progressive motility. Nearly all stallions are frozen in 0.5 ml straws, and the number of straws per dose varies by stallion and lot, typically 3 to 8.

Do you keep fertility data on the stallions?

Yes. We track fertility data on every stallion we manage, which is one reason the Mare Breeding Passport is required. Give us a call to discuss fertility details on any stallion you’re considering.

May I visit the stallions?

Our stallions live with their owners and trainers at locations across the country, rather than at a single farm. That said, we know seeing a stallion in person can be a big part of your decision. We’re happy to coordinate with owners and will always do our best to arrange a visit. Just reach out and let us know which stallion you’d like to see.
